ALAPPUZHA: The LDF bagged the Ambalappuzha block panchayat with its candidate G. Prabha being elected president of the block panchayat on Thursday. In the election held at the block panchayat hall Ms Prabha of the CPI (M) defeated the UDF candidate Vatsala S Venu of the Congress. In the election, three members of the National Congress (Indira) voted in favour of Ms Prabha along with the five LDF members. The elections were facilitated following the passage of a no-confidence motion against the former president Shobha Gopinath earlier. With three members defecting, the Congress has only two members at present in the block panchayat. With today's elections, the UDF has lost three panchayats in the district in June following the NC (I)-LDF tie up in panchayat councils. Those panchayats which had slipped out of the UDF control are Kandaloor in Kayamkulam assembly constituency and Pallippad in Haripad assembly constituency. In both the panchayats the NC (I) members were elected presidents with the help of the LDF. In Kandaloor panchayat of the total five members of the Congress, four joined the NC (I).
