Kalam offers prayers at Velankanni Church

NAGAPATTINAM: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visited the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health at Velankanni near here on Thursday and offered prayers. Revaluation

CHENNAI: Postgraduate degree candidates who appeared for the M.E., M.Sc (except five-year integrated course in Computer Science and Technology), M.A. (Communication), M.B.A and M.A. (HRM) semester and non-semester examinations held by the University of Madras in April can apply for revaluation of answer scripts. The results for the above examinations were published on Thursday.

Requisitions can be sent with a demand draft for Rs. 650 per answer script drawn in favour of the Registrar, University of Madras here within 21 days from the date of publication of results, provided it is his/her first attempt in that particular semester as per the scheme of examination, a release here said. — Special Correspondent

Poll roll verification

CHENNAI: The State Election department on Thursday began sensitising the electoral registration officers of the Commission's recent stipulations on processing of applications for claims and objections. The EROs from the northern districts attended the meeting. It was presided over by the Chief Electoral Officer, Naresh Gupta.

Revenue officials would conduct checks and wherever it was found that verification had not been done properly, re-verification had to be resorted to completely, Mr. Gupta said. — Special Correspondent

Solatium announced

CHENNAI: The Chief Minister on Thursday announced solatium for the next of kin of 14 police personnel who died in harness. The families of the deceased were sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh each, says an official release.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also granted Rs. 50,000 each to the families of another 14 persons who died in accidents or in lightning in different parts of the State. — Special Correspondent

AI schedule to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore

CHENNAI: Air India will de-link its South East Asia operations from July 7 by operating daily direct flights to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur separately.

According to C.J. Sainath, Passenger Sales Manager-Tamil Nadu, under the new schedule, the airline will offer 140 executive class seats and 1,267 seats per week, increasing the capacity by over 80 per cent.

The AI-424 daily service will depart Chennai at 2-30 a.m. and reach Kuala Lumpur at 8-45 a.m.

In the return direction, AI-425 will leave Kuala Lumpur at 9-45 a.m. and arrive here at 10-45 a.m. Flight AI-414 from Chennai will leave at 1-40 p.m. and reach Singapore at 8-15 p.m. In the return direction, AI-415 will leave Singapore at 9-25 p.m. and arrive here at 10-45 p.m. — Special Correspondent

63 DYFI workers held for stopping train

Thanjavur: Sixty-three members belonging to the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) were arrested when they stopped a train and staged demonstration demanding withdrawal of hike in petrol and diesel prices.

According to the police the members pulled chain and stopped the Tiruchi-Kumbakonam Passenger train at two places between Thanjavur and Kumbakonam around 9.00 a.m. and staged a demonstration protesting against the hike in oil prices. — Special Correspondent

New ration cards from July 2

Thanjavur: New ration cards, valid up to 2009 will be distributed in the respective fair price shops in the district from July 2 to 31, as per the following schedule, according to the Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni.

The cards would be distributed on all Saturdays and Sundays in the month of July.

The card would be issued only to the head of the family.

If the head is not able to come, the next senior members of the family authorised by him would be eligible to get the card.

To get the new card, applicants should submit the old ration card, acknowledgement receipt and a sum of Rs. 5 has to be paid. — Special Correspondent

31 cases settled at Lok Adalat

NAGAPATTINAM: The regional office of the Indian Overseas Bank has settled 31 cases of defaulters through the Lok Adalat conducted on the District Court premises here on Wednesday.

T.S. Sarguna Pandian, Chief Regional Manager, IOB, said that the bank had issued summons to 178 defaulters, of which 31 cases were decided and settled for a sum of Rs.6.85 lakhs by Arumugham, a retired sessions judge.

A spot recovery of Rs.1.02 lakhs was made at the Lok Adalat. — Staff Reporter

NGOs invited for child workers welfare scheme

KARUR: Proposals are invited from the non-governmental organisations in the district for the scheme for welfare of working children in need of care and protection, according to the Collector, A. Karthik.

The objective of the scheme is to rehabilitate the child workers and potential child workers, especially those who have no family or support. NGOs satisfying the requisite norms for the scheme would only be eligible for assistance. For further details, the Probation Officer, Department of Social Defence, Government Juvenile Observation Home, East Boulevard Road, Tiruchi, could be contacted. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.50 feet today. The inflow was 382 cusecs and the discharge, 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
