Staff Reporter

Addresses tsunami-affected people

NAGAPATTINAM: Every house should be self-sufficient for which each family should plant at least two coconut trees, two drumstick trees and have two cows, said President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Silladi darga premises on the Nagore beach on Thursday evening.

He was addressing a gathering of Muslim men and women affected by the tsunami in the Silladi and Nagore areas.

When a man in the gathering asked about the construction of permanent houses in the tsunami-hit area, the President said the site had been identified in Nagore and the houses would be built as early as possible. He appealed to contractors and builders to construct permanent houses to withstand tsunami.

The President asked the gathering to take pledge of doing hard work and provide equal education to girls and boys.

J. Radhakrishnan, Nagapattinam Collector, said 303 hectares of land was required for construction of permanent houses and 173 hectares had already been identified. The President offered prayers at the Silladi and Nagore dargas.

Earlier, he visited Samanthanpettai and saw the progress of construction of permanent houses.
