VILLPURAM: S. Ramadoss, founder leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, has said that education should be taken out of the Concurrent List and be solely made the State subject. In a country like India where multiple educational systems exist, evolving a common education policy acceptable to all disciplines is impossible. Therefore, it would be redundant to keep education in the Concurrent List, said Dr. Ramadoss at a press conference at Thailapuram near here on Thursday. He termed the proposal to introduce an all-India common entrance test as "a dangerous proposition," because it would not be feasible in the absence of a common education system. Moreover, it would be detrimental to the interests of rural students. When the qualifying examinations were in vogue, entrance tests were meaningless, he said. Experience had shown that only urban students got through the entrance tests meant for admission to the premier educational institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management and the National Institutes of Technology (erstwhile Regional Engineering Colleges). For instance, in the Chennai IIT 80 per cent of students was from other States, and the rest from the metropolis, to the exclusion of rural candidates. The PMK leader urged the Tamil Nadu Government either to promulgate an ordinance or convene an urgent session of the State Assembly to pass legislation so as to give legal sanctity to its order dispensing with the improvement as well as entrance examination systems for admission to professional courses.
