14 persons held in two cases of theft

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: The Bellary district police have solved two cases of theft by arresting 14 persons. They also recovered stolen property, including copper cables and mopeds, from the accused.

Pankaj Kumar Thakur, Superintendent of Police, told presspersons that the Hadagali police arrested 12 persons, all residents of Govindpur tanda in Hadagali taluk, in connection with the theft of copper cables from the premises of Suzlon Developers Ltd., which is engaged in generating wind power at Huligudda.

Based on the information given by the accused, the police, led by M. Girijapati, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kudligi, recovered around 700 kg of copper cables worth Rs. 4 lakhs, which had been sold to Mahaveer of Hagari Bommanahalli. The police also seized two Tempo Trax vehicles used for transporting the stolen property.

In another detection, the Brucepet police, led by its Inspector, M.R. Reddy, arrested two persons and recovered from them nine mopeds and a TV set.

According to Mr. Thakur, Mr. Reddy and his staff, who were conducting a routine check of vehicles, noticed Abdul Jabbar of Rampur and Mehabub Basha, a mechanic from Mundargi village, riding mopeds without documents and took them into custody.

During interrogation, the two are said to have admitted to stealing the two mopeds from Brahmin Street in the city. They also reportedly admitted to having committed a similar offence earlier. Based on the information given by them, the police recovered nine vehicles — five TVS XL and four Luna mopeds — and a colour TV set from them.

Held on gambling charge

The police arrested 19 persons allegedly indulging in gambling in an open place at Chikkajogihalli in Kudligi taluk. A sum of Rs. 8,010 was seized from them.
