Work on bypass to begin soon

BELLARY: A 16-km bypass will be constructed at Sandur town. The State Government has approved the Rs. 14-crore proposal, and the order to begin work is expected to be issued in a week's time, according to the Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram.

Mr. Jayaram, who has been transferred, was speaking to presspersons here on Thursday. He is expected to hand over charge to Arvind Srivastav on Friday.

Agency identified

Mr. Jayaram said an agency has been identified to build the bypass. The project will be executed on the BOOT (build, own, operate and transfer) basis.

The process of acquiring 132 acres of land will begin soon, he added.

Hundreds of trucks laden with iron ore leave the town every day.

It is also proposed to build a 26-km bypass in Bellary city, and experts have been asked to prepare a technical report in this regard. ASIDE (Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports and Allied Activities) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry will provide 50 per cent of the cost. Excise revenue

The district has recorded an increase of 21 per cent in the excise revenue during the current year.

The excise auctions held this year fetched Rs. 7.56 crores as against the Rs. 6.27 crores the Government got on this count the previous year.

As usual, the bid for Bellary taluk was highest.

This year, the rental increased to Rs. 2.13 crores as against Rs. 1.90 crore in the previous year. The following are the rentals the other taluks yielded (the previous year's figures have been given in brackets): Hospet Rs. 1.75 crores (Rs. 1.45 crores), Hagari Bommanahalli Rs. 46 lakhs (Rs. 40 lakhs), Kudligi Rs. 77 lakhs (Rs. 48 lakhs), Sandur Rs. 1.1 crore (Rs. 80 lakhs), Hadagali Rs. 51 lakhs (Rs. 43 lakhs) and Sirguppa Rs. 82 lakhs (Rs. 69 lakhs).
