Tributes paid to leaders

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Both Houses of the legislature on Thursday paid rich tributes to the former Minister K. Prabhakar; the former MP Tulasidas Dasappa; and the former legislators Khadi Shankarappa and Vishalakshamma, who passed away in recent months.

Speaking in the Legislative Council, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, said Tulasidas Dasappa was a simple and honest person. Although his parents — H.C. Dasappa and Yashodhara Dasappa — were Ministers in the Union and State governments, respectively, it did not make him insolent. Tulasidas did not hanker after ministerial posts, he added.

The Water Resources Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, said that when Prabhakar, a Dalit who was known for his forthrightness, was not included in the Devaraj Urs Cabinet, he asked Urs, in the presence of party stalwarts, the reason for it. The Leader of the Opposition, D.H. Shankaramurthy, and others mourned the former Union Minister for Sports and Hindi film star of yesteryear Sunil Dutt. The Council also mourned the death of C.D. Narasimhaiah, professor of English and litterateur; R.S. Manohar, a former Member of the House; C.V. Rajagopal, journalist; L.S. Radhakrishnan, scientist; B.C. Ramachandra Sharma, poet; Narayana Krishna Rao, popularly known as "Enkay"; and D.A. Pandu, educationist.

From Assembly

In the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said that as a member of the Council of Ministers of S. Nijalingappa and Devaraj Urs, Prabhakar served the cause of the weaker sections. The Leader of Opposition, B.S. Yediyurappa, said Prabhakar was committed to principles.

The Minister for Industries, P.G.R. Sindhia, said Prabhakar will be remembered for his integrity. Tulasidas Dasappa also stood for values.

The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, said Prabhakar was an ideal leader who strove for Prohibition and rural development.
