Rs. 124-crore aid for NFFW programme

HYDERABAD: A fresh assistance of Rs. 124 crores has been sanctioned by the Centre to the State for implementing the National Food for Work (NFFW) programme. The assistance will be in the form of cash grant as well as rice. The aid is expected to benefit thousands of poor families in seven districts of Mahabubnagar, adilabad, Warangal, Khammam, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Cuddapah. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has instructed officials to implement the programme in such a manner that not a single person is forced to migrate in search of work. - Special Correspondent

Maoists damage wine shop

NALGONDA: Two Maoists of the Sagar area committee destroyed a wine shop for defying their diktat to close down its shutters at Angadipet gate in Pedda Adisarlapally mandal on Wednesday night. They took away Rs.16,000 from the cash counter. - Staff Reporter

Three die in suicide pact

KARIMNAGAR: Unable to undergo mental agony and torture of in-laws who were reportedly demanding additional dowry, a woman along with her two children committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in Vedurugatta village of Vemulawada mandal on Thursday. The husband of the victim, Parasharamulu, had migrated to the Gulf in search of employment. - Staff Reporter

Reservation for women

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Local Bodies Elected Women Representatives Federation has urged the Chief Minister to retain reservation for women for the second term. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, federation representatives said the Tamil Nadu Government had issued orders continuing the reservations for the second term in local bodies. - Special Correspondent

SCCL bags award

HYDERABAD: Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has received the prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award for the year 2005. The award was presented to the CMD of SCCL, R.H. Khwaja, by the former Prime Minister of Sweden, Ola Ullsten, at the 7th World Congress on Environment Management held in Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) earlier in June. - Special Correspondent

YSR releases book on corruption

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, released a book titled `Dimensions of crime and Corruption in India' authored by A. Ranga Reddy, Professor, Department of Economics, SV University, at his camp office on Thursday. The Kurnool MP, K. Jayasuryaprakash Reddy, the Nandikotkur MLA, G. Lifetime achievement award for Yaskhi

NIZAMABAD: The Telugu Association of North America has announced prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to the Nizamabad MP, Madhu Goud Yaskhi, according to the MP office spokesman. Apart from Mr. Goud, four others, including the Satyam Computers chairman, Ramalinga Raju, were selected for the award.

Tirupati student excels

TIRUPATI: K. Anusha, studying eighth standard at Sri Satyasai Srinivasa High School, has been selected for the State-level third prize at the "Bharatiya Samskruti Jnana Pariksha 2004" conducted by the Hardwar-based Gayatri Parivar early this year, to enlighten students on Indian culture.

She will receive the prize at a function to be organised at Hyderabad on July 3.

Rs. 37cr. sanctioned for education

CHITTOOR: The Government has sanctioned Rs. 37 crores for the development of education through Sarvasiksha Abhiyan with instructions to create better amenities in Government schools.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, a project coordinator said that 250 pre-primary schools would be opened and in these schools teaching will be imparted in such away as to attract children.

Lifer for murder

MADANAPALLE: The VII Fast Track Court Additional Judge, Suryanarayana Goud, on Wednesday sentenced one person to life term and four others to three-year rigorous imprisonment in connection with a murder case.

Army recruitment

Nellore: Recruitment for the category of soldier-technical in the army would be held at the police training college grounds, Anantapur, on July 7 and July 8, under the auspices of Branch Recruitment Office, Guntur.

Interested candidates from Nellore having passed in physics, maths and chemistry of Intermediate examination are eligible to compete in the recruitment.
