CHANDIGARH: The Bhupinder Singh Hooda Government on Thursday appointed senior bureaucrat G. Madhavan as the new Chief Secretary and Nirmal Singh as the Director-General of Police. This follows the retirement of Sunil Ahuja and A.S. Bhatotia, respectively. Both Mr. Ahuja and Mr. Bhatotia had been appointed by the Indian National Lok Dal Government which was voted out of power in the recent Vidhan Sabha elections. Mr. Madhavan was the Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Revenue, Consolidation and Rehabilitation. Over the years he has served with distinction holding various important assignments. Besides heading several departments, he has also been Secretary under four Governors. He was also Member-Secretary of the First State Finance Commission set up to make recommendations for devolution of funds to Panchayati Raj and Local Bodies. Mr. Nirmal Singh was currently serving as Director General, Prisons. He was appointed Director-General of Haryana Police on the eve of the Vidhan Sabha elections after the Election Commission directed the then Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala to transfer the then DGP, M.S. Malik, to ensure free and fair polls. Only recently the Hooda Government had placed Mr. Malik under suspension for his alleged role in the formation of the now disbanded Haryana Industrial Security Force.
