Women contenders for Nobel prize
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Of 1000 women from more than 150 countries nominated for the "1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005," three hail from Tamil Nadu.
This project, unrelated to the Swedish Nobel prizes given each year, was started in 2003 in Switzerland, but gained international support over the years. The 1000 women who are nominated are experts in their fields of work, and are committed to the cause of peace and justice in the most difficult circumstances.
The three nominees from Tamil Nadu are Prof. Saraswathy, who has been campaigning for the cause of Eelam; Shyamala Nataraj, activist and founder, South India AIDS Action Programme and Krishnammal Jaganathan, freedom fighter and activist for the land rights of Dalit women.
