"BJP, SP using Imrana issue as a political football"

MUZAFFARNAGAR: The All-India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) on Thursday accused the Samajwadi Party-led Uttar Pradesh Government and the Bharatiya Janata Party of making the Imrana issue "a political football."

At a public meeting in Kukda, Imrana's native village, as part of the organisation's protest against the rape and subsequent religious edicts nullifying the victim's marriage, AIDWA president Subhasini Ali said political parties, including the BJP and the ruling SP, should abstain from politically "colouring" the sensitive issue. The statement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav terming the edict against Imrana as "well-thought" was an injustice to all women, she said.

Demanding suitable amendments in personal laws, Ms. Ali said changes were necessary to give women equal rights.

Earlier, Ms. Ali met Imrana in the village and led a procession demanding stern punishment to her father-in-law who had allegedly raped her. — UNI
