Pomp, gaiety mark Kempegowda Day

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Kempegowda Day celebrations, organised by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), took off with much pomp and gaiety in the city on Thursday.

The "Kempegowda Jyothi Yatra," which started from the four towers at Lalbagh, Kempambudhi Lake, Ulsoor Lake and Ramanashree Park near Mekhri Circle, converged on the BMP head office.

The Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, who received the "jyothi," said the celebrations have been organised to remember `Nadaprabhu Kempegowda,' who founded the city 437 years ago.

Apart from the ward-level celebrations, a grand cultural evening was organised at the BMP head office. A "hasyotsava" (humour fest) was followed by the staging of a Kannada play "Dindi" in the evening.

On Friday, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will present the Kempegowda Awards to 26 persons, the best employee award and the sports award. A light music concert and a drama on Kempegowda's life and achievements will also be presented.

Opposed

The Bharatratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya Engineering Pratisthana Trust has opposed the selection of the Director of Libraries, P.Y. Rajendra Kumar, for the award. In a statement, the Trust members alleged that a Lokayukta case is pending against Mr. Rajendra.

When contacted, the Mayor said that all the 83 applications received for the award had been forwarded to the selection committee. "The selection was made by the committee and we have not involved ourselves in it," he said.

Mr. Rajendra said that the Trust was against him even before he became the Director. "I have also sought the Government's permission to file a defamation case against the Trust," he said and added that he will receive the award in person on Friday.
