COIMBATORE: Opposition councillors on Thursday condemned "repressive" measures by police on people who attempted a road blockade on June 24 at Aathupalam to demand the shifting of the Corporation compost yard from Vellalore. Alleging that he was roughed up by the Coimbatore Rural Police officials though he was only waiting for the Lok Sabha MP, K. Subbarayan, the Communist Party of India councillor, R. Devaraj, said police should put down criminal activities and not a democratic movement. C. Padmanabhan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pointed out that the people had a genuine reason for the protestbut the police and Government were bent of preventing it. The Mayor, T. Malaravan, intervened to point out that what happened outside the Council was not relevant to it. The Opposition later staged a walkout and returned after a few minutes. The Mayor said once the Corporation's Rs.18-crore waste management programme was implemented, health hazards from the yard would be eliminated.
