CBI raids at 41 places in Capital

Five cases of disproportionate income registered

NEW DELHI: Unaccounted assets worth crores of rupees have been detected by the Central Bureau of Investigation during raids conducted at the residences of various officials, including an Assistant Commissioner of the Delhi police, here in the Capital on Thursday.

The CBI conducted raids at 41 places across the city following which five cases of possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income were registered.

The Additional Director (Education), Delhi Government, K. C. Aggarwal, was booked after preliminary searches allegedly revealed that he owned a three-storey house with a basement in East of Kailash, apart from houses and flats at various places in Delhi and Haryana. The CBI also claimed to have recovered Rs. 7.25 lakhs in cash from his premises and said he possessed assets worth Rs. 2.5 crores.

The Joint Commissioner, Central Excise and Customs, A. K. Singhal, presently on deputation to Central Economic Intelligence, was allegedly found to be in possession of assets worth over Rs. 2 crores. Searches at his residence led to the recovery of Rs. 8.5 lakhs in cash. He too owned several houses and vehicles, the CBI said.

According to the CBI, Udayveer Singh Rathi, the Assistant Commissioner of the Delhi Police, allegedly owned a fleet of cars - Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent, Santro and Tata Safari - and also a farmhouse in Mehrauli. Rathi was earlier promoted from the post of Station House Officer to ACP. The CBI said Rathi's assets were worth over Rs.2 crores. In the nationwide raids carried out in April, the CBI had booked a Deputy Commissioner of the Delhi Police for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to the known sources of income.

Another official to be booked was Additional Executive Director of Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (Ministry of Information Technology), D. P. Gupta. Five immovable properties and bank balance worth Rs. 25 lakhs have been detected during searches so far.

A retired executive engineer of the Delhi Development Authority, presently staying in Dwarka, has been booked for allegedly accepting forged bank guarantees of more than Rs. 9 crores from contractors causing huge losses to the DDA. So far, Rs.2.35 lakhs in cash and several incriminating documents, apart from two bank lockers reportedly containing cash of more than Rs. 5 lakhs and Fixed Deposit Receipts worth Rs. 10 lakhs, have been detected. The CBI also conducted surprise checks at M/S India Art Palace at Sundar Nagar in South Delhi following allegations of illegal possession and sale of antiques. Several paintings and statues worth over Rs. 5 lakhs were sized from there. A case has also been registered against a trust which allegedly caused losses to the exchequer to the tune of Rs. 1.74 crores by availing of tax rebates on the basis of a forged letter purportedly issued by the Ministry of Finance. Further searches are on.
