"Insult to people of Ramanathapuram"

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Ramanathapuram MP, Bhavani Rajendran, on Friday said the people of Ramanathapuram district had been insulted as the district MP had not been invited to the inaugural function of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project. A major portion of the Rs. 2400-crores project is to be implemented in the district.

In an exclusive interview to The Hindu , Ms. Rajendran, who is also the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam State Resolution Committee member, said the organisers neither printed her name on the invitation nor invited her for the function. "The project is going to be implemented in the territorial waters of Ramanathapuram district, which is my constituency. As per protocol and tradition, the elected representatives of local area where the scheme is being implemented should be invited. It is [a] strange, unfortunate and unbelievable [violation of protocol]," she said.

She said she would attend the function not as an MP but as a citizen of Ramanathapuram. She would raise the issue at the appropriate forum and with DMK president M. Karunanidhi.

"The function should have been organised in Ramanathapuram district. But, they [the organisers] cheated the people of Ramanathapuram by selecting Madurai, which is no way connected with project," she said.
