Judicial probe sought into encounter killings

    HYDERABAD NALGONDAKHAMMAM: The killing of four CPI(ML) Janashakti leaders, including Riaz, in an alleged encounter at Karimnagar on Friday evoked extensive condemnation and demand for a judicial enquiry.

    Revolutionary ballad singer Gadar alleged that Riaz and other activists were arrested by the police here on Thursday night, tortured and shot dead later. R. Subashchandra Bose, secretary, CPI (ML) New Democracy, while seeking a judicial

    enquiry by a High Court judge, described as "concoction," the police version of the killing. He said the killing of Riaz exposed the Government lack of seriousness about holding second round of talks. In Warangal, Varavara Rao, revolutionary poet and Maoist ideologue, called upon democratic forces to fight the State-sponsored violence eliminating people's leaders. He described the killing as a "brutal act."

    "The encounter manifests the Government's values and morals. It was a deliberate act where an emissary to peace talks was killed violating all norms. It has shocked the civilised world," he asserted. According to Mr. Rao, Riaz was a legal cadre of the Janashakti.

    NALGONDA: Earlier, the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, quoted the police to argue that Riaz and others were killed in `a real encounter.'' ``According to information I've received from the DIG office, it is a real encounter. As I am away from Hyderabad, I don't have further information," the Minister told reporters at Nagarjunasagar. Asked for reaction to rights activists' allegation that the police had lifted the four from Hyderabad and killed them, he said: "We are not resorting to fake encounters. We engage in encounters only for self-defence.''

    HYDERABAD NALGONDAKHAMMAM: A huge cache of weapons and ammunition of the Janashakti was sized by the Khammam police at Kakaravai in Tirumalayapalem police station limits late on Friday evening. The seizure included 11 8 mm rifles.

    The weapons belonged to the dalam indulged in the killing of a rival faction leader near Mamillagudem tollgate in Nalgonda district recently.
