Mulayam to go ahead with power privatisation

Stalemate over power strike continues

LUCKNOW: Despite opposition from the employees, Uttar Pradesh would go ahead with the privatisation the Anpara-c power plant, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Friday. ``It is being done in public interest... Power crisis is not confined to the State only... There is no way out but we will ensure that the interest of the employees is protected,'' Mr. Yadav said at a Press conference here.

On being pointed out about the reservations expressed by CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat on the issue, he said there were some differences among the Samajwadi Party and the Left parties but they would not come in the way of their cooperation.

In a clear snub to power employees Mr. Yadav said, "We will go ahead and no one can stop it.'' He however, appealed afresh to employees to shed their `obstinate posture' over the issue, and assured them that their interests would not suffer.

``I can only appeal to workers to support government efforts to end the power crisis in UP with financial help from private power companies,'' Mr. Yadav said. The government would enter into an agreement with employees if required, he said.

UP Power employees and engineers are on a warpath and even threatened a flash strike if the representatives of private power units visited Anpara C for on-the-spot inquiry. Earlier, talks between the State government and the employees union failed.

NTPC's help sought

The State Government sought the assistance of NTPC engineers to take over the thermal power units in the view of the strike.

The State government had approached the engineers of the NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, BHEL and NHPC asking they would have to take charge of UP power generating units, if employees went on a strike. PTI & UNI
