Thomas Varghese assumes office

CHENNAI: : Thomas Varghese has taken charge as Southern Railway General Manager.

He took over on June 29, after serving briefly as General Manager, Northern Railway, New Delhi.

Mr. Thomas Varghese belongs to the 1971 batch of the Indian Railway Traffic Service. After working in the Operating and Commercial Departments of Southern Railway in the Tiruchi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai Divisions, he became Chief Commercial Manager in 2003 and Chief Operations Manager in January 2005.

Mr. Varghese hails from a family of bureaucrats. His father, late T.A. Varghese, ICS, was Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu (then Madras), in 1965 — a position his son, T.V. Antony, Mr. Varghese's elder brother, held in 1989. Their uncle, T.A. Joseph, was General Manager, Southern Railway, from 1953 to 1958.
