For the sake of Braj-Vrindavan

Lakshmi B. Ghosh

NEW DELHI: It happens to be an attempt to save God's own land. Literally. With the 5,000-year-old rich cultural heritage of Braj-Vrindavan now facing the threat of losing its real "environment", an effort is being made to use "devotion" as the saving force.

In a bid to attract attention towards the dismal state of Braj's rich cultural heritage, Braj Rakshak Dal, a voluntary organisation working towards conservation and restoration of the area, has organised a special cultural evening here in the Capital this coming Saturday. The event will also see a short, power-point presentation being made on the integrated Braj development project, apart from a bhajan sandhya.

Founded three years ago in Barsana (Mathura), the Braj Rakshak Dal has been working towards restoration of the rich heritage that the area embodies. In the land of Krishna's leelas and the inspiration of many stories and songs, residents of Braj are finally coming together to improve things for themselves.

According to the organisation, only three of the 48 forests associated with Krishna's raas leelas are left in their natural form today. Of the 1,000 water tanks associated with Krishna leelas, 80 per cent are filled with silt, with their carved chhatris and ghats, while of the 27 Yamuna ghats in Vrindavan, only one reportedly remains.

From engaging professionals for the listing and survey of the leela-stahalis scattered across the 1,000 villages in the Braj region to the plan to developing rare heritage sites here with the help of devotees, the organisation is hoping to do a lot. Having made a beginning by inspiring the residents of Braj, the organisation is now hoping to muster support for the campaign from across the country.
