KOZHIKODE: John Ochanthuruthu, who was removed from the post of Head of the History Department of Calicut University following loss of antiques from the department, has said that he is the victim of a vilification campaign. Reacting to the loss of and damage to antiques in the museum room of the department, Dr. John said: "As a historian and archaeologist, it deeply distresses me... I have done a lot to bring laurels to the History Department. An example is the University Grants Commission- sanctioned special assistance programme. "Those who have been jealous of my achievements as Head of the Department in a brief span of one year have been carrying on a vilification campaign against me. The present incident is the culmination of their nefarious activities," he alleged. Beside damage to objects of historical value, loss of a number of books from the department library was also reported. After an inquiry by the University Syndicate, the case has been referred to the Crime Branch for further investigation. The university had also placed under suspension a part-time employee of the department in connection with the incident.
