WASHINGTON: Republicans and Democrats in the Senate are getting ready for the Supreme Court confirmation hearings with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor having announced on Thursday that she is retiring. Many analysts are convinced that the confirmation hearings which could begin this August will be a battle between the Republican hardliners who will insist on the President having his way and the Democrats who will equally be adamant in not rushing matters. The replacement for the Bench is set for October and one impression is that the President George W Bush will be making his choice known next week.
Preparations on
Republicans who control the Senate have already started making preparations and are confident that a replacement for Justice O'Connor will be in place by October. "I think it is an important objective, and I think we can reach it,'' said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, said, adding that he did not expect the Democrats to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee. But Democrats have made it known that a specific time frame for the replacement is not the main issue and that it was up to the President to make matters difficult or easy. "We have plenty of time,'' said Democratic Senator Charles Schumer; and the Minority Leader Harry Reid, said that the President could avoid a divisive showdown by putting forth a nominee quite like Justice O'Connor. "There is no reason for this to be knockdown, dragged-out fight in the Senate. How easy this is, is up to the President", Mr. Reid remarked.
Speculation
The Chair of the Judiciary Committee will be in charge of the confirmation hearings and the initial speculation is that the process will not even start a month to six weeks after Mr. Bush has put forward a name; and the confirmation process lasting a week or more depending on the nature of the witness list.
