CHENNAI: Thousands of workers belonging to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged demonstrations through out the State to protest against the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices.

In the city, the demonstration was held in front of the Park Town post office. It was led by the party's organising secretary, Sulochana Sampath. The protesters shouted slogans against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

"Anti-people"

Describing the hike as "anti-people," Ms. Sampath said that despite the increase in diesel price the State Government had not increased the bus fare. This showed its concern for the people. She charged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a constituent of the UPA Government, and the Left parties with not being interested in the welfare of the common man, as they had not questioned the Government over the price hike.

P.K. Sekhar Babu, MLA, N. Balaganga, Adhirajaram and former Ministers C. Aranganayagam and S. Muthusamy were among those who participated.

Demonstrations were also held in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, the Andaman Islands and Pondicherry, a party spokesperson said.
