Traffic congestion on Indrakeeladri to be eased

GSI proposes construction of a tunnel, ghat road widening

VIJAYAWADA: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has advised the construction of a tunnel between K.L. Rao head water works in Bhavanipuram and the Pongal shed near the `Om' circle on Indrakeeladri hill, besides widening of the ghat road, to ease traffic congestion on the existing road up the hill.

The Endowments Department commissioned a survey by the GSI to explore the possibility as to whether the ghat road can be widened. The GSI, which submitted its report to Sri Durga Malleswara Swamivarla Devasthanam, proposed a 400-metre long tunnel facilitating the passage of pedestrians and vehicles. With a view to resolving the parking problem on the hilltop, a parking lot would also be constructed abutting the tunnel. Besides, the GSI officials have also approved the widening of the ghat road. They have suggested hydraulic pumping of cement concrete to points where the rocks are loosely attached to the earth on the hill to prevent landslips.

The Devasthanam officials are planning to take up the works on the tunnel and the ghat road at the earliest and complete them by Dasara festival in October.

"We will organise a meeting with the GSI officials and contractors next week. The Commissioner of Endowments will chair the meeting and finalise the plan. Once the proposals are approved, works will begin immediately," says E. Gopala Krishna Reddy, the executive officer of the Devasthanam.

While construction of the tunnel is estimated to cost about Rs. 4 crores, the widening of the ghat road and prevention of landslips would cost about Rs. 2 crores. The Devasthanam would have to acquire some land near the head water works for the construction of the tunnel. The extent of land would be decided only after finalising plan.
