Junior aquatics from today

Sports Reporter

KOLKATA: A record number of around 800 participants will vie for top honours in the 32nd junior National aquatic championship, beginning at the Subhas Sarovar here on Sunday.

The contest for supremacy, in all likelihood, will be between Karnataka and the rest of the country taken together. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi will be attempting to break the dominance that Karnataka has been maintaining with a constant supply of champions over the years.

Since the probables for the Asian age-group meet, to be held in Bangkok in August, will be selected from the championship, the event will witness tough contests, feels Pradeep Kumar, who recently has been named the chief National coach. Kumar also feels that the championship will bring up a lot of talented swimmers who can be groomed as the future champions.

Participation

The participation is encouraging with 27 State teams and Union Territories and the Services units making it the highest entries of all times.
