6 die in Sivakasi fireworks unit blaze

Staff Reporter

District Revenue Officer to hold probe

REDUCED TO RUBBLE: Fire personnel clearing the debris at a fire works unit, which caught fire in Anupankulam near Sivakasi on Saturday.

MADURAI: Six persons including five women were killed and 22 persons injured in a blaze at a fireworks factory in Anupankulam village near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district on Saturday afternoon.

Out of the 48 working sheds in the premises, spread over five acres, 10 collapsed and 32 were partly damaged.

But luckily, the `magazine block', where the finished products were stored escaped unscathed. The fire broke out, when one of the fancy fireworks, reportedly being tested inside the factory, landed on a shed.

The injured, including 19 women and four men were taken to the Sivakasi Government Hospital and 13 of them, who were grievously injured, were referred to the Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital.

Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare Inbathamizhan inspected the accident spot and visited the injured in the hospital.

When asked whether any irregularities were found in the factory, District Collector A. Mohamed Aslam said it appeared to be an accidental fire. However, he pointed out that usually the units tested their finished products only after 6.30 p.m., when the employees leave the premises. An enquiry by District Revenue Officer R. Nandagopal has been ordered.

Solatium to kin

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs. 50,000 to the families of the dead.

A sum of Rs.15,000 will be provided to all those who have been hospitalised and Rs. 6,000 to those who suffered minor injuries. The payments will be made from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. In a statement in Chennai, Ms. Jayalalithaa expressed her condolences.
