ALAPPUZHA: In an innovative move, a local body in the district has started a news magazine with the `aim of spreading the message of development and to enable the people to defend themselves against the incursions against their freedom with the weapon of information.' Pramod Narayanan, president of Bharanikkavu block panchayat that started the magazine, said it is the first such initiative in the district. The magazine, a bi-monthly named Chalanam, is perhaps the first to be published by a local body in the country, said Mr. Narayanan, who is also the editor of the magazine. The panchayat has published two issues of the magazine. The second issue that was published on Friday has articles by Sukumar Azhikode, Vayalar Ravi, MP, and CPI(M) Alappuzha district secretary G. Sudhakaran in addition to local news.
