MADURAI: : The welfare of fisherfolk will be taken care of while implementing the Sethusamudram project, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi has said. Speaking at the foundation-stone laying function here on Saturday, he said the country would gain numerous benefits from the project. Suggestions of the people would be considered during the implementation. Besides fetching foreign exchange, the project would give a fillip to Tamil Nadu's industrial growth, he said. Mr. Karunanidhi listed the benefits Tamil Nadu gained during the one-year rule of the United Progressive Alliance including withdrawal of CENVAT for weavers, declaring Tamil a classical language, the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and now the Sethusamudram project. He said the desalination project could be executed in Chennai, if the State Government cooperated. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala hoped that the project would be completed as per schedule. Union Minister of Shipping T.R. Baalu, said the UPA Government tasted victories in the form of the Sethusamudram project and the repeal of POTA. Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram assured the people that the project would be completed as per schedule at the estimated cost. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko described the launching of the project as "a small step for navigation and a giant leap of economic activities for India and Tamil Nadu." Union Minister R. Anbumani; Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president G.K. Vasan; Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadharajan; CPI State secretary D. Pandian; D.T. Joseph, Secretary, Department of Shipping; and N.K. Raghupathy, Chairman and Managing Director, Sethusamudram Corporation Limited, spoke.
