VIJAYAWADA: The district Collector, Naveen Mittal, on Saturday, announced that the district administration was preparing a Rs. 20-crore project to export mangoes from the district to foreign countries in the next season. Addressing the agri-export zone's district-level taskforce committee meeting at the Sub-Collector's office here, Mr. Mittal suggested the setting up of an agency with representatives of market committees and mango growers as its members. The committee would give suggestions to the growers on how to achieve high yield. He asked the growers to design a brand label and use the same on the fruit packages that would be exported from the entire district. The Collector asked the Horticulture Department to set up fruit packaging system at the growers level. "We will make arrangements to export the fruit from Gannavaram airport by discussing the issue with the officials of the Airport Authority of India," he said. The joint director of the Horticulture Department, R. Vidya Bhushan, said that gardens are spread over 65,000 hectares.
