MANGALORE: The Karnataka State Revenue Department Gramasahayakas Association on Saturday urged the Government to release unpaid salary of Rs. 1,000 each of the past seven months to 10,450 gramasahayakas within ten days. The association has warned that it will stage a dharna in front of Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash's residence if the Government fails to concede its demands. Speaking to presspersons here, the president of the association, B.S. Chandru said these 10,450 people have been working in the Revenue Department for the past 26 years. The condition of their families without a source of income was pitiable. He alleged that the revenue department and the Government are responsible for the recent deaths of Chennakeshava, a gramasahayaka at Bagenahalli in Turuvekere taluk of Tumkur district and his wife, Nagarathnamma. Chennakeshava was working as a gramasahayaka for the past 12 years. Mr. Chandru urged the Government to compensate Chennakeshava's family. His aged parents, who are barely able to fend for themselves, are caring for Chennakeshava's children, he said. Mr. Chandru also expressed concern over the alleged drafting of gramasahayakas by a few senior officials for domestic work. He urged the authorities to take steps towards their proper recruitment. TheDakshina Kannada district unit of People's Union For Civil Liberties has extended its support to the association on the issue.
