PORT LOUIS (MAURITIUS): Voters in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius cast their ballots in parliamentary elections on Sunday after a campaign in which the governing coalition and the main Opposition coalition have run a close race. Citizens of this Indian Ocean island streamed to polling stations and started casting their votes for 62 MPs. Another eight deputies will be nominated to represent ethnic minorities and complete Mauritius' 70-member Parliament. About 817,000 of Mauritius' 1.2 million people are eligible to vote and as of 1 p.m. (0900GMT) about 26 per cent of registered voters had cast their ballots, said Irfan Raman, a member of the Electoral Commission of Mauritius. Final results will be announced on Monday afternoon. The election pits Prime Minister Paul Berenger's political alliance of the Mauritian Militant Movement and Deputy Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth's Militant Socialist Movement against an Opposition alliance led by Navin Ramgoolam of the Labor Party.
