Agitation Committee of Farmers Displaced by Karanja Project threatens to launch an agitation

ASSURANCES GALORE: The Minister for Forests and district in-charge, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, speaking to the members of the Agitation Committee of Farmers Displaced by the Karanja Irrigation Project, in Bidar on Sunday.

BIDAR: The Agitation Committee of farmers displaced by the Karanja Irrigation Project has threatened to launch an intensive agitation if their demands for better rehabilitation are not met immediately. The agitation will include no-tax campaigns, non-cooperation movements, rasta rokos, opposition to government schemes and programmes, and obstructing functions attended by the Chief Minister or other members of the council of ministers.

This was decided at a meeting of evacuees held in Bidar on Sunday.

The president of the committee, Suryakanth Patil Dakulagi, said that he will accept the invitation of the Minister for Forests and district in-charge, Gurupdappa Nagamarapalli, to lead a delegation to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to present a list of demands before him. "This will be the last delegation from the committee to go meet the Chief Minister. If our problems are not solved and demands not met, the committee will be forced to launch an agitation," he said.

Mr. Dakulagi said that the Government had not responded to their demands of better rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Former Ministers, H.K. Patil and Allam Veerabhadrappa, have not kept their promise to provide the evacuees a special rehabilitation package. The Government, which acquired lands and houses during the construction of the Karanja project, has not provided enough compensation. Most of the evacuees have no source of revenue, he said.

Mr. Nagamarapalli promised to fix an appointment with Mr. Dharam Singh within two days.

The honorary president of the committee, Basvantrao Muttanna; the organising secretary, Shivasharanappa Patil; the president of the zilla panchayat, Dawood Mallik Deshmukh; and Congress leader, Ishwar Khandre, were present on the occasion.
