Nepal parties set terms for talks

KATHMANDU: Rejecting the royal government's charge that they have joined hands with Maoists, major political parties in Nepal have said that both King Gyanendra and the rebels should fulfill their ``pre-conditions'' before they could start a dialogue with either of them.

``The parties are open to dialogue with both the King and the rebels, but they have to first fulfill our pre-conditions,'' said Nepali Congress (Democratic) President Gopalman Shrestha here.

Mr. Shrestha, one of the leaders of the seven-party alliance, said the King should withdraw the February 1 "unconstitutional'' step of taking over full powers and the Maoists must give up violence before the parties could initiate dialogue with them. — PTI
