CHENNAI: : Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Sunday assured the fishermen in coastal Tamil Nadu and the environmental activists that the Centre would ensure there was no damage on account of the Sethusamudram project, launched in Madurai on Saturday.

He told presspersons here that the project would not affect the livelihood of fishermen. The authorities would ensure that there was no damage to the ecology or environment in the region.
