NEW DELHI: Proving the leadership of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in the trinity mission of education, research and patient care under one roof, three of its faculty members bagged the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for the year 2004 for their contribution towards the mission. The doctors from AIIMS who have been conferred with the award are Vinod Kochupillai, Chief of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Rotary Cancer Hospital; N.P. Gupta, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology; and M.K. Singh, Professor of Pathology. Dr. B.C. Roy Awards, established under the aegis of the Medical Council of India, are given every year by the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award Fund to honour eminent persons who have achieved distinction in medicine, philosophy, science and arts. The awards were presented by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on the occasion of Doctor's Day on July 1. Dr. Gupta had done his M.Ch. in Urology from AIIMS in 1977 and had first joined AIIMS in March 1975 as a Senior Resident. He had been elevated to the post of Professor and Head of Department of Urology in July 1998 and has been continuing there since. A life member of various societies and associations, he has been conferred with several awards earlier too including the President's Gold Medal, Urological Society of India in 2003. An eminent surgeon, he has also published as many as 198 papers and six books on various medical topics, written chapters in various books, and prepared educational films on various medical procedures and issues.
