TIRUPATI: Passenger services were badly hit in Chittoor district, especially in the buzzing pilgrim centre of Tirupati, on Monday with the RTC strike. A large number of buses remained off the road, forcing the public to search for an alternative mode of transport. Even for the meagre number of services, the management had to depend entirely on hired buses and contract employees. Even those could not be plied as the agitating union members were learnt to have obstructed them at many places. As even supervisors were part of the strike, the heat was really felt in the remote bus stations. Though the authorities scampered to arrange a few services on vital routes, they were found to be grossly insufficient. Tirupati-bound passengers were seen loitering in and around the Central Bus Station, desperately searching for some mode of transport to reach their places. As a fallout, private bus, jeep and taxi operators had a field day. The RTC management has claimed that there was a 'good response' from the retired employees to their call to meet the contingency, while the unions maintained that the retired staff have decided to keep away, expressing solidarity to their erstwhile fraternity. However, the number of applicants is expected to reach the headquarters from various depots only on Tuesday morning. "As the services are badly hit, we will try to arrange as many services as possible on vital routes depending on the staff availability and the security situation, meaning deployment of police forces in sensitive sectors", a senior RTC official told The Hindu on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, the CPI, CITU and Andhra Pradesh Medical and Sales Representatives Union have expressed their support to the RTC employees' agitation.
