Interceptor-1 introduced to check traffic violations

The device includes alcohol and pollution gas analysers and multiple cameras

  • It detects traffic violations through multiple cameras mounted on top of the vehicle
  • Erring motorists will be shown violations, educated about its consequences
  • Device can generate computerised violation notices
  • Interceptor crew will create road safety awareness programmes for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Ideal example of a combination of educative and penal enforcement

RULE BREAKERS BEWARE: A traffic constable looking at an Interceptor-1 introduced in Mysore on Monday.

MYSORE: After successfully helping police departments across the country ensure road safety, the Interceptor-1, a high-technology vehicle equipped with sophisticated enforcement and surveillance equipment, made its debut in the city on Monday.

An innovation of the Institute of Road Traffic and Education (IRTE), the Interceptor-1 is a device that essentially detects traffic violations through multiple cameras and a laser-based speed measuring device. It also has alcohol and pollution gas analysers.

The Interceptor -1, which was installed in a Maruti Gypsy for the inaugural run, is also capable of generating computerised traffic violation notices. The police vehicle carrying the device is expected to operate in high-traffic areas of the city. The City Police Commissioner, Pravin Sood, inaugurated the equipment here on Monday.

    Camera

The camera, which is mounted atop the vehicle, records the driving track or behaviour of road users and erring motorists will be shown the violations. Offenders will also be informed about the consequences of their action and penalised if necessary.

The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians and cyclists, who are not governed by traffic rules.

The interceptor crew takes special care in educating these vulnerable road users, who otherwise are not given any credence by the enforcement agencies, officials said.

The President of the IRTE, Rohit Baluja, who was also present on the occasion, said it is an honour for the IRTE that the Interceptor-1 is being used by the Mysore Traffic Police. The Interceptor-1 has successfully helped police departments in New Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Uttaranchal, and Goa, he said.

The Interceptor-1 is an ideal example of a combination of educative and penal enforcement, he said. "While the interceptor educates road users, the enforcement agency penalises them," he added.

    Road safety

The launch of Interceptor 1 in Mysore coincided with the city police's programme to educate schoolchildren about road safety through a teacher's training programme.

The training programme for the first batch, which commenced on Monday, had 35 teachers from various schools.

The teachers are being trained to teach students basic traffic rules through the academic curriculum without burdening them with extra work. Billboards with pictures on road safety, depicted through cartoons, will be given to all the schools in the city. Experts from IRTE will impart training to the teachers.
