This Day That Age
The Portuguese Government has approved a decree which would grant wide administrative and financial autonomy to Portuguese possessions on the Indian subcontinent, it was disclosed in Lisbon on July 5. The possessions grouped together would be provided with a 23-member Legislative Council authorised to vote on Bills submitted to it by the Governor-General. The Government of the possessions would comprise the Governor-General and the Legislative and Government Councils and its authority would cover all the possessions, including Dadra and Nagar Haveli, although these have been occupied by Indians. The statute, which will go into effect next August 1, calls for the State in India to become, starting at that date, "a collective personality under public law, completely interdependent with metropolitan Portugal and the Portuguese overseas territories."
