dated July 6, 1955: PM to meet Pope

The Pope will grant an official audience to Prime Minister Nehru on July 7, a Vatican source said on July 4. The audience will take place in the course of the Premier's visit to Rome. The last prominent Indian to be received by the Pontiff was the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, who had a private audience on November 23 last. The Holy See and India maintain full diplomatic relations, with a Papal Internuncio in New Delhi and an Indian Minister accredited to the Holy See, but resident at Berne, where he also serves as Minister to Switzerland. On the occasion of his audience with the Pope, Mr. Nehru will also call on Mon. Domenico Tardini, the Pope's Pro-Secretary of State, and other members of the Secretariat of State. Likely topics of discussion are the question of Goa and Catholic missionaries in India. The Holy See maintains complete neutrality in the dispute between India and Portugal over Goa.
