RTC operates skeleton services in Kakinada

Efforts on to rope in unemployed, retired drivers

KAKINADA: The RTC on Tuesday managed to operate skeleton services on all the important routes in Kakinada division by pressing into service 33 RTC buses in addition to 45 hired ones. The Divisional Manager of RTC, P. Lakshmaiah, said the buses were being operated with the help of homeguards and other contract workers. Passenger traffic was thin in view of the strike and also because Tuesday is considered inauspicious for travel.

Mr. Lakshmaiah said efforts were on to pool private buses and unemployed drivers besides retired drivers to run the buses. He hoped that by Wednesday the position would improve, if at least supervisory staff resumed duties responding to the High Court's advice.

Dharnas staged

Giving details of the services being operated, Mr. Lakshmaiah said 18 RTC buses from Kakinada depot, seven from Tuni, six from Ramachandrapuram and two from Yelesweram depots were operated without any obstruction. However, the striking employees chose to lodge their protest by staging dharnas in front of the bus depots at all these places. Mr Lakshmaiah said they were planning to operate at least two hired buses to Visakhapatnam from Wednesday morning to meet the demand.
