Cash awards for Plus-II toppers

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Sri Sivakumar Educational and Charitable Trust celebrated its 26th anniversary by giving away cash awards, totalling Rs.1,30,000, to State rankers in the Plus-II examinations.

Veerannan, one of the trustees, in his reported noted that that Trust was founded in May 1979 during a function held to mark Sivakumar's 100th film `Rosappoo Ravikkaikari'. The then Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran received Rs. 25,000 from Sivakumar but returned it to the actor's mother for forming the Trust. The interest accrued from the proceeds was given as awards to top rankers.

Mr. Sivakumar said as interest rates fell during the subsequent years, he started mobilising more funds. "Last year it was our silver jubilee and we distributed awards to six toppers and three physically disabled students who secured the first three places in their school. The amount was increased to Rs.1,30,000 this year from Rs. 45,000 last year". Sivakumar's son Surya, said he would bear the cost of education of two poor students of Loyola College.
