ANANTAPUR: Residents of BC Colony at Kotanka village in Garladinne mandal detained the staff of the Central Power Distribution Company (CPDC) for five hours when they went there to collect dues. The villagers released the detained staff after the police intervention.

According to information reaching here, the staff of the CPDC from Garladinne, led by the Assistant Engineer, Sai Shankar, went to the village to collect dues of Rs. 3 lakhs from about 100 households in the colony. They told the residents that power would be disconnected immediately as the dues were pending for long.

After the initial opposition that they were not given any notice for severing the connections, some of the residents paid their dues. But, the CPDC went ahead with disconnecting power to the entire colony leading to an altercation between residents and the staff, as the former sought to know why those who had cleared the bills were being made to suffer.

Heated exchange

Other residents too demanded four more days time to clear their dues. But, the CPDC staff refused to budge stating that they would not give power until all the dues were cleared as the residents were already given ample time. A heated exchange between the villagers and the CPDC staff led to the former attempting to attack the latter.

While the AE escaped the villagers the other staff members were caught and detained in a room from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. without even providing drinking water to them. As the matter was reported to the police at Garladinne, the ASI, Venkataramaiah, and his men went to the village, pacified the residents with an assurance of giving four days time to clear their dues and immediate restoration of power to the colony. The employees were let off after the power supply was restored to the colony.
