Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee condemned the terrorist attack on the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi site at Ayodhya on Tuesday morning even as the State was put on a state of high alert. "I condemn the incident at Ayodhya. We have alerted the police throughout the State to be in a state of high preparedness", Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

The former Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu, also condemned the attack which he described as "regrettable". Mr. Bhattacharjee reviewed the steps being taken to tighten security across the State at a meeting with the Chief and Home Secretaries.

"As in the rest of the country we have put the police in a state of red alert", said Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb.

An order has been issued to keep a strict vigil on religious extremist groups and on vital installations in the districts, said Home Secretary Prasad Roy.
