Dance as an instrument to foster world peace

FOLK ART ON FOREIGN SOIL: Members of the Sakthi Kalai Kuzhu along with organisers A.J.A. Chandra and Kuro Kawa Packo who are to perform at the International Young People's Muse Festival to be held at Nami island in the Republic of Korea.

DINDIGUL: Dance was among the earliest forms of communication of the human race. Now, it is being used as a potent tool to establish peace, brotherhood and friendship among nations.

A 12-member team comprising rural girls belonging to the Sakthi Kalai Kuzhu in Dindigul, got an opportunity to perform the `thappattam,' a traditional dance form of southern Tamil Nadu in the Republic of Korea.

The Song Island Foundation and Yo Pe Fe 0005 organising committee in Korea has invited the troupe to take part in the International Young Peoples Muse Festival to be held on Nami Island in South Korea from July 28 to August 2.

The organiser, Kuro Kawa Tacko, said the purpose of the festival was to invite young people from all over the world to give a performance of their country's traditional and modern music, songs, and dances as well as share their heritage with new friends on the Nami island, venue of the festival. We hope that we can reaffirm the fact that people of the world can truly be friends. The number of dancers and choreographers would do variations on several themes. Our work is to establish friendship and peace in the world in future.

The socially relevant compositions of Sakthi Kalai Kuzhu tempted the organisers to invite the troupe. Their dances contain deep meanings and comprise diverse themes including dowry harassment, women's rights and the suppression of women, she said.

They have been given an opportunity to meet people by breaking barriers such as food, language, costume, art and architecture. The festival offers young people a platform to share their dreams and hopes for the future. This would also be an opportunity for Koreans to learn about the life and culture of Tamil Nadu, she concluded. The team had performed in the social fete in South Africa.
