No bandh or hartal: BJP

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party has not issued any call for a bandh or hartal in Kerala on Wednesday to protest against the terrorist attack on the Sri Ramjanmbhoomi Temple complex at Ayodhya. State president of the BJP P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said here on Tuesday that the party would only observe protest day on Wednesday. Demonstrations and meetings would be organised as part of it. He held the UPA Government's policy of appeasement responsible for it. - Special Correspondent

Catholicos ends fast

KOCHI: The Catholicos of the Jacobite Syrian Church, Baselios Thomas I, ended his fast on Tuesday at the Mar Baselios Medical Mission Hospital, Kothamangalam. He has been shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital. He had earlier gone on a fast in front of the Trikkunnath seminary, Aluva, which he ended on Sunday. He resumed it on Monday after being shifted to the hospital, demanding the release of people who had been arrested by the police in connection with Sunday's violent incidents in front of the St Mary's Jacobite Syrian Church, Aluva. Meanwhile, 48 persons who had been arrested in connection with the violence were released on bail. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has convened a meeting of the Jacobite and Orthodox factions on Wednesday evening for an amicable settlement. - Staff Reporter

Security strengthened

KOZHIKODE: Security has been strengthened in North Kerala in the wake of the terrorist attack at in Ayodhya. The North Zone Inspector General of Police M.N. Krishnamurthy told The Hindu here on Tuesday that special arrangements had been made to monitor the situation at all sensitive places in Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram and some parts of Kozhikode district. Patrolling has been intensified at the communally sensitive areas in Kozhikode district. Meanwhile the Rashtriya Sweyamsevak Sangh and its affiliates have planned to take out marches in the city and other places on Wednesday to protest against the incident. - Staff Reporter

Strict vigil

GURUVAYUR: Security has been strengthened at the temple town of Guruvayur in view of the terrorist attack at Ayodhya on Tuesday. Top district police officials told The Hindu here that an additional contingent of 60 police personnel has been deployed at Guruvayur. The practice of screening those entering the temple using metal detectors will be resumed by Wednesday. However, this not cause any inconvenience to the pilgrims. - Staff Reporter

in Pandalam

PATHANAMTHITTA: Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker inaugurated the new taluk union office of the society at Pandalam on Tuesday. Union secretary Chandrangada Kurup and vice-chairman Pandalam Sivankutty spoke. — Staff Reporter

Elected office-bearers

KOLLAM: S. Ratnakumar and H. Reghudas have been elected chairman and secretary respectively of the Energy Conservation Society. The other office-bearers are Riji G. Nair, vice-chairman; V.T. Raju, joint-secretary, and J. Udayakumar, treasurer. A 21-member executive committee has also been constituted. Hindu Aikyavedi plans protest march

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Hindu Aikyavedi would take out marches in seven major towns in the district on Wednesday in protest against the intrusion of terrorists into the Rama Janmabhumi in Ayodhya.

In a statement issued here, Hindu Aikyavedi State secretary K. Haridas said the marches would be taken out in Pathanamthitta, Thiruvalla, Ranni, Kozhencherry, Pandalam, Konni and Adoor. — Staff Reporter

Youth Congress flays MLA's resignation

PATHANAMTHITTA: Youth Congress district president A. Sureshkumar alleged that the resignation of Aranmula MLA Malethu Saraladevi was sheer deceit of the people who had elected her to the Assembly four years ago.

In a statement, he said the Youth Congress workers would take out a vehicle rally in Aranmula Assemby segment on Wednesday to expose the "betrayal" of the constituency by the MLA. — Staff Reporter

Youth drowned

THRISSUR: A 22-year-old youth was drowned in a temple pond at Choolissery, near Peramangalam, in the district on Tuesday afternoon. The police identified him as Chittilappilli Rinoy. He slipped into the pond, where he had gone with his friends. — Staff Reporter

Protest

ALAPPUZHA: Workers of the Congress party took out a march in Chengannur town on Tuesday against the resignation of Sobhana George from the Assembly. Congress leaders D. Vijayakumar, Abey Kuriakkose, Sunil P. Oommen and Mannar Abdul Latheef led the march. They later held a

public meeting.

BSNL awards

Alappuzha: Sanchar Seva Pathak and Sanchar Sarathy awards of the BSNL will be presented at Alappuzha Telephone Bhavan at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
