Plan for Total Sanitation Campaign approved

More than 77,000 toilets will be built under the scheme

CHITRADURGA: An action plan is being prepared to create a healthy and hygienic environment in the district for the effective implementation of Total Sanitation Campaign, a scheme sponsored by the Centre, said Narayanaswamy, chief executive officer of Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat.

He gave out the details of the plan at the meeting convened here on Monday to discuss and approve the project.

Implementation

According to the plan, more than 77,000 toilets will be constructed under the scheme. The gram panchayats have the responsibility of implementing the campaign, he said.

The plan proposing to sanction a grant of Rs. 500 each to 74,400 individual toilets, apart from Rs. 20,000 for community toilets, Rs. 5,000 each for 1,000 anganwadi toilets, and Rs. 20,000 for every toilet in 973 schools was unanimously approved by all members.

An intensive campaign to create awareness among people in the rural areas about the proper usage will be launched soon, he said.

Nandish, Deputy Secretary of the zilla panchayat, enumerated the details of the mode of implementation of the project, sanctioning of subsidy, supervisory powers of the gram panchayats, and the responsibility of the beneficiaries.

Project outcome

R.P. Manohar, district adviser for drinking water and Danida projects, spoke about the project's outcome. He said that if the scheme is implemented, pure drinking water will be available, and the air will be free of pollution, which will control the spread od communicable diseases. He said that every house in all the villages should have a toilet.

H. Nagaraj, vice-president of the zilla panchayat, and B.K. Manjnath, chief planning officer, other members participated in the meeting. Girija Pujari Ningappa, president, presided.
