High alert in Delhi, tight vigil at public places, temples

Railway stations, bus terminals, markets and Metro stations under surveillance Police to search guest houses for new tenants who have not furnished their particulars; car dealers being asked not to sell vehicles without proper verification

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police on Tuesday sounded a high alert in the Capital and stepped up security at temples and vital installations following the terrorist strike at the Ramjanmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya. Raids are also being mounted at suspected terrorist hideouts.

Police Commissioner K. K. Paul summoned an urgent meeting of senior police officers in the afternoon to review security arrangements across the city. Dr. Paul asked the officers to step up deployment at the Jhandewalan, ISKCON, Lakshminarayan and other prominent temples.

As a precautionary measure, the police along with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have tightened security at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Only this past week four men allegedly working as conduits for Pakistan's Inter-State Intelligence (ISI) network were arrested in South-west Delhi with arms and ammunition and a map of the airport.

Police patrols at crowded places like railway stations, bus terminals, busy markets, cinema halls and Delhi Metro stations have been intensified. The police said extra security personnel have also been deployed at the Jhandewalan headquarters of Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) and in the sensitive Walled City area of Delhi.

Dr. Paul has also directed the Deputy Commissioners of Police to conduct searches at guest houses and gather details about new tenants in their districts who have not furnished their particulars to the local police.

Meanwhile, officers of intelligence agencies held meetings with the special cell of the Delhi police to discuss the movement of suspected terrorists in different parts of the Capital. Intelligence officials have been asked to mount raids at suspected terrorist hideouts, especially in South Delhi, North-east Delhi and North-west Delhi.
