WARANGAL: The bomb at the MGM Hospital has thrown a challenge to the district police who have been on high alert for long. It was quite unexpected.

Ever since the elimination of the top cadre in several extremist groups, the police had been sensing that there would be retaliation in a big way, particularly from Maoists.

In a series of encounters that took place in the last four months, the police succeeded in eliminating top cadres heading the CPSUI, Maoist, Janashakti and Adivasi Liberation Tigers (ALT) with the latest being the Maoist party District Committee Secretary (DCS) DVK Swamy alias Yadanna.

Though the movement of naxals has come down significantly in the district, the police sensed some trouble.

Intelligences sources indicated that the naxals might target the ruling party MLAs or MPs or ministers.

Besides beefing up the security cover for public representatives, they were asked to move to safe places and not to venture into remote corners of the district.

Some of those who were on hit list were instructed not to visit the district for some time.

Since Yadanna's killing in an encounter, the Maoists had been lying very low.

But, the smaller CP groups - particularly the Janashakti members, had resorted to killing of ruling party leaders at village level and damaged the public property on several occasions.

The police had even averted attacks on police stations by securing the plans at encounter sites.

Now with the placing of the bomb at MGM Hospitals, the naxals appear to have made it clear that they would target anyone, anytime and anywhere.

It was aimed at killing the policemen in large numbers who had escorted prisoners to the hospital on Saturday.

With the Janashakti disowning the responsibility for the incident, the police were in confusion in linking it with the extremist group.
