NEW DELHI: Havildar Kulwant Singh, deployed with the 4 Sikh Light Infantry -- an Army unit attached to Rashtrapati Bhavan for ceremonial duties -- shot himself with the rifle of a sentry on Tuesday. The police said 37-year-old Kulwant asked the sentry to fetch tobacco for him. The sentry left his 5.56 mm rifle with Kulwant who shot himself in the head around 9-30 a.m. He was rushed to Army Base Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Earlier, Kulwant had talked to his wife at Ludhiana in Punjab around 8 a.m. He told her that he was feeling low due to his illness. He had gone on 14-day causal leave and had joined duty only a couple of days ago. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Anita Roy, said his wife was on her way to Delhi and only after talking to her the exact nature of Kulwant's illness or any other domestic problem could be ascertained. A case has been registered at Chanakyapuri police station and inquest proceedings are on.
