dated July 7, 1955: China's First 5-Year Plan

China intends to boost her industrial output by 104.1 per cent in quantity and 98.3 per cent in value during her First Five-Year Plan, the National People's Congress in Peking was told on July 5. With direct Soviet aid she will develop atomic power for peaceful uses in the service of the nation's economy. Chairman Mao Tse-tung, the Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, and Dr. Ho Chi-minh, the visiting President of North Viet Nam, were present at the opening of the session and were warmly applauded. The Congress, China's highest organ of State authority, elected a Presidium of 79 and approved the agenda. Industrial construction is the core of the Five-Year Plan, it was stated by Vice-Premier Li Fuchun, Chairman of the State Planning Commission.
