ANANTAPUR: The District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, has asked "gopala mitras'' to create awareness among farmers to take up community fodder cultivation in their villages to overcome the fodder problem, in view of the continuing dry weather. Such an exercise should meet the requirement of all cattle population of the village, she said. Speaking at a meeting on development and supervision of artificial insemination to the cattle here on Wednesday, Ms. Anuradha noted that the cattle would be in good health if they were given the fodder grown in their area. She asked "gopala mitras'' to encourage farmers to take up vermi-compost.
High breed cattle
Volunteers of the Animal Husbandry Department should help farmers develop high breed cattle with the help of artificial insemination (AI) at their doorstep. The lone alternative income generation activity to farmers was dairy farming, she noted. Dairy farming was encouraging in the district, she said. The CEO of Andhra Pradesh State Animal Husbandry Corporation, Nissar Hussain, claimed that the State was first in the country in the implementation of artificial insemination. There were an estimated 5,900 "gopala mitras" in the State and their activities were encouraging. A `gopala mitra' of Anantapur district, Purushottam, stood second in the State by conducting artificial insemination to 2,851 cattle, he said. Anantapur was fifth in the State in the implementation of the programme. The District Area AHC Chairman, Nethappa, said dairy farming was coming to the rescue of farmers at a time when they were crippled by drought conditions. Some 50 `gopala mitras' from different parts of the district and other officials also participated.
